What talc does in rubber

Talc may be used inside an elastomer compound or as a dusting/parting material. Define the role before choosing the powder.

General material requirements

There is no single specification for this entire industry. Use your formulation and production trials to turn these priorities into measurable acceptance limits.

RequirementWhat to specify or check
Compounding useEvaluate fineness, dispersion, mineral composition and platy structure. Suitable talc can modify rigidity and barrier behaviour; verify the required properties in your elastomer.
Dusting & parting usePrioritise anti-stick performance and the powder’s distribution and handling. A suitable parting powder is not automatically the right compound filler.
Colour & formulation behaviourAgree colour needs and assess compatibility in the compound. Review processing and cured properties rather than approving on an optical value alone.

Buy raw feedstock or finished powder?

If you operate a mill, source lumps or smaller raw fractions against mineral composition, feed size, moisture and sorting requirements. Budget for yield, grinding, classification and qualification of the finished powder.

If you use talc directly in a formulation, ask for processed powder with an agreed particle-size distribution. Raw fines are not a substitute for micronized talc. Confirm the processing route and current availability.

How to qualify the material

Qualify raw feedstock for composition, then evaluate the ground powder in mixing and the relevant processing or curing trials. For compound use, assess the required mechanical properties; for parting use, assess separation and handling.

  1. Send us your current specification or target properties and test methods.
  2. Confirm the source, grade and proposed material form with our team, and ask us for the relevant technical data, safety data and applicable laboratory reports.
  3. Evaluate a representative sample with the same preparation used for comparison material.
  4. Run a production-relevant trial and record both benefits and trade-offs.
  5. Agree an approved reference, lot acceptance criteria and how source or processing changes will be communicated.

Compare supply offers fairly

Compare offers for the same material form and specification. Confirm packaging, net weight, quantity, destination, Incoterm and delivery schedule. For raw talc, include processing yield and freight in your cost comparison; for powder, include handling and performance in the finished product.

Ask how samples relate to the shipment and how lots are identified. If asbestos assessment is part of qualification, agree source-specific sampling and laboratory evidence before the order.

Your enquiry checklist

Elastomer, compound or parting role, powder size, colour requirement and the processing or finished-product properties to evaluate.

Add whether you need raw mill feed or finished powder, expected quantity, packaging and destination.
